Disc Golf in a Baseball Stadium? Yes, Please!

Quite a few years ago I learned disc golf by playing with a small group of dedicated guys.  I’m not talking as far back as Steady Ed, but a long time ago.  We even travelled to all the courses within an hour and competed against each other with a tournament format.  It was about ten to twenty of us that played regularly.  A couple of these guys started the local club and built a major local course called Mayflower Hills.  A huge accomplishment and massive endeavor.  Since then, disc golf has changed and grown.

The picture above shows one of those changes.  MVP Discs now sponsors events for clubs to put on. For $40, you can compete in a MVP Circuit Challenge event.  You will receive and be required to throw only three discs and be placed with similar leveled competition.  In the Salem challenge the players weren’t allowed to the play the course until the morning of the event.  These factors really level out the competition!

On top of that nice bang for the buck deal, if you lived near Salem VA and signed up for the 2023 MVP Open at the Salem Red Sox Stadium, you got to play disc golf in a baseball stadium!  That means hotdogs, beer, and many fans… well, maybe not fans as we all know disc golf isn’t that big yet.

As much as I enjoy the adventure of trekking through the “wilderness” and throwing discs at chains, this event has stolen my heart.  It has to be the best event in the region.  What a wonderful and creative way to chuck plastic!  I can’t wait until 2024.

It’s an absolute pleasure to be able to participate in these adventures.  Some of that comes down to my training, which is informed by my background in sports, education, exercises and physical therapy.

But most importantly, these adventures require help from others.  You’ve seen a few others listed above including Roanoke Disc Golf, MVP Circuit challenge and I’d like to give a special thanks to Jire for his photography.  He’s a true artist, and you can see many of his pictures from this event if you click that link.

Thanks to my friend Sam, AKA “Disc Dude”, who has been a huge driving force in what I’ve learned about disc golf in the last couple years.  He is a community disc golf leader, a disc golf ambassador and formidable competitor (watch out!).  He’s the thrower in the video above.  Do you think he chuck a disc over that wall?

If you’re looking for coaching or just want to learn more about disc golf form, consider checking out Overthrow Disc Golf.  Josh has been kind to me, and I believe he has the player’s best interest in mind.
