You’re More Capable Than You Think

Would you?

I recently did something outside of my comfort zone.  I didn’t know I was going to get the opportunity to do this thing.  In fact, up until the point where I jumped out of the boat and started swimming I really didn’t think I would.  But when life gives you these chances, I try to take them.

I often ask my patients when I’m striking up conversation with them, “Do anything crazy over the weekend? Skydiving? Cliff diving or bungee jumping? It’s just an opener to get a laugh and it’s about 50/50 on effective versus bombing.  But it gets people talking.

Sometimes, I get asked the question back: “Well, Daniel, what did you do this weekend? Any cliff diving, bungee jumping, or skydiving?” I usually laugh and say, “No, nothing like that.” Followed by something like “I did try a new recipe, and I went for a walk in the park.”

But a patient asked me and I realized…

I believe that everyone has the potential to grow and learn, and that stepping outside of our comfort zones is one of the best ways to do that. I don’t think that cliff diving is the best way to do that.  But it is an option if you know it’s 90′ of water below ou, thousands of folks have done it, you can swim quite well, you have folks around to save you if you are drowning, you can commit without doubt and your wife said it was okay.  Well now that I’m done justifying my risky behavior.

Next time you’re feeling challenged, don’t be afraid to take a step in the unknown. You might be surprised at what you’re capable of.
